We were lucky to get some family pics in before Lindsay popped her fourth baby out. A little over a week later her newest addition came.

This one kind of reminds me of Little House on the Prairie.

Congrats Dindo Disto (a.k.a. Lindsay). Everyone thought you were going to have a fourth boy but the planets aligned and you got your wish. We’re all looking forward to seeing little Lydia grow up.

Kids Teaching Me?…Who’da Thought

This was a really fun and really difficult shoot for me. I’ve never done a session where it was just me and four girls. I have to admit that it was kind of overwhelming at times. Getting them all to listen to me was tough. I learned to let go just enough so the subject could kind of dictate the types of photos we did. As soon as they had a say with some creative control we were able to go back and forth with what we all wanted to do.

They wanted to make silly faces.

I wanted them to be cute.

It ended up being a good balance.

Recently I’ve been doing a bunch of photo shoots for an organization called Liberty Lutheran. It’s felt great working for a company whose mission is to help senior citizens lead better and fuller lives. I was back at Paul’s Run on Sunday photographing a special ceremony where a Torah was donated to the retirement center. One of the most emotional moments was when the Torah was carried around the congregation so people could touch it.

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

I’ve photographed hundreds of couples over the years. After doing so many you start to develop a sense of who is going to make it and who isn’t simply by their interactions. Guessing correctly has become a bit of a specialty for me as I’ve never been wrong. Out of the three hundred couples I’ve photographed there’s unfortunately been six break ups. Each one I knew wouldn’t make it. This past Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Caroline and Mack. I knew in five minutes that these two were meant for each other. There was a great feeling of ease between them and they seemed to do nothing but laugh the whole time. In my opinion, these two are good to go.

I knew this Saint Patrick’s Day was going to be a good one when I found out my client’s last name was Drinker. They did not let me down. I started the morning off with the girls at Sevan the Salon and the grooms house for the getting ready pics. We took a short drive up the street to Saint Mathew’s Church for the ceremony and ended the formals in Valley Forge Park. The rest of the night was spent at the Marriot West in West Conshohocken for the reception.

Helping Hands

Since the new year began I’ve been making a strong effort to donate my photography skills to organizations who are making a difference in the world but can’t afford photography. The past week has been busy with two shoots. The first one took place through an organization called SCI (Sustainable Communities Initiative). They hold a few contests every year where a different impoverished block is selected to receive free work on homes who sign up. The amount of work that was completed on these homes in that amount of time was amazing. I was also impressed, kind of surprised and left feeling hopeful by the amount of young people who donated their time that day.

My favorite part of the day was getting to take portraits of the women who are at the forefront of changing their community. They were all so grateful and happy and willing to do whatever it takes to spread the word on how amazing SCI is. I know that SCI has more builds going on in different sections of the city throughout the year. My plan is to do more in depth portrait sessions with the next group and hopefully do some video interviews. I think they could be very powerful tools to help bring awareness and funding to that organization.

The second was for PAN (Parents Advisory Network) which consists of a group of volunteer parents who support the families of babies in the NICU at Bryn Mawr, Lankenau and Paoli hospitals. They’ve all had babies in the NICU so they are able to provide support through their own NICU experiences. They’re celebrating their twenty fifth anniversary as an organization and needed some group portraits of all the members. It’s a great group of women who devote a lot of time to a worthy cause.

Torah

I guess I can’t be surprised anymore when I find out that I didn’t know something really common that everybody else does. My two favorites examples are that I always thought it was “play it by year” not “play it by ear”. For some reason it makes perfect sense to me. Up until I was 29 or 30 I thought the difference between a skirt and a dress was length. Skirts were obviously above the knee, while dresses came below. Trust me, I know how idiotic it sounds that I didn’t know the difference between the two and I don’t know how I went so long in life without knowing so. It’s funny though right? So last week I had to go to a retirement home to photograph a 400 year old Torah that was on loan and some people who were going to be reading from it during a special service. I remember specifically asking the person who gave me the assignment “I know this is going to sound dumb but what’s a Torah?” I guess there’s no time like the present to learn.
